SATB Chorus & Piano - Digital Download

SKU: IZ.VMF222V

Composed by Robert M. Shearn. Octavo. 11 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #VMF222V. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMF222V).

9 x 12 inches.

Easter Morn functions best in a worship setting during the Easter season. However, it has been used, on occasion, in a concert setting as well.

Within liturgy or other worship settings, it is best used as a reflection piece: an affirmation song following the proclamation of the Gospel, or as a thanksgiving piece following the communion rite.

While a full SATB choir, with piano, flute, percussion, and brass can yield splendid results, Easter Morn is easily adaptable for use during a simple outdoor sunrise service using guitar and vocals, or with light instrumentation. The tenor of the piece is festive and joyful, yet, somewhat subdued.

Fear and confusion initially gripped the women disciples who discovered the tomb empty and first heard the angel's question, “why do you seek the living among the dead? It was not until later when the words of Jesus regarding his resurrection sunk in: “just as he said, JUST AS HE SAID, that their joy overflowed in a chorus of alleluias! Navigating this tension, and capturing this dynamic is key to an effective performance of the piece.

Composed by Irving Berlin. Arranged by Tom Council. Holiday,Pop. 11 pages. Tom Council #697278. Published by Tom Council (A0.1093208).

Irvin Berlin’s “SNOW†from White Christmas was arranged for the Collins Classic Carolers Christmas 2004, my wife’s Christmas Caroling group, as a request from a Client. It sat in my Finale file not being able to be published until I found that it could now see the light of day thanks to ArrangeMe. The performance here is by Rhapsody of Plano West Sr. High, Plano, Texas. Sarah Council, my daughter in law, is the director. Since the Collins Classic Carolers sang a cappella as they entertained each Christmas, this arrangement is for SATB, a cappella. I would love for someone to be able to use it this Christmas after 18 years. Thanks for looking and listening Tom Council youtu.be/j-nwytxoBbg

Eliot's The Waste Land, April is the cruellest month. The song describes how somebody feels sad and depressed despite all the good things associated with spring. The song was featured in the 1959 Broadway musical The Nervous Set, but was written in 1955 before this musical and was incorporated into it.

Here are some program notes:

Johann Franck (1618-1677) was born in Guben, Germany, the son of a lawyer.
Like his father, Johann studied law at the University of Konigsburg, where–in
addition to his studies–he developed a warm friendship with a group of hymnists
and poets. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became
mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soon
became known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind
Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns,
building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep
through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the
herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness,
and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of
encouragement.

Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here.

By Barry Manilow. By Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane. Arranged by Tom Council. A Cappella,Christmas. 5 pages. Tom Council #701543. Published by Tom Council (A0.1098016).

A favorite song heard every “Christmas is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas†music and lyrics by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin. Teaching in high school, I loved to work with vocal jazz and one Christmas I made an a cappella arrangement of this song for my POP Group. But because of copyright, it remained in my Finale Folder until ArrangeMe came along. Here is a recording by Matthew Curtis and one of his assistants. And yes, it’s now available on Sheet Music Plus. Merry Christmas and thanks for listening. Tom Council

By Frank Sinatra. By George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. Arranged by John Fries. 20th Century. 4 pages. John Fries #824360. Published by John Fries (A0.1228242).

Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to find out all that I have to offer and to express your comments or concerns. Thanks, John.   This song began life in 1930 as a nine-bar phrase with the working title There's No Stopping Me Now.  Its title phrase Nice work if you can get it came from an English magazine.  It was one of nine songs the Gershwin brothers wrote for the movie A Damsel in Distress in which it was performed by Fred Astaire with backing vocals by The Stafford Sisters.  The song was published in 1937.  The first jazz recording of the work was by Tommy Dorsey three weeks after the release of the film.  The song was recorded by many jazz singers and adopted by bebop instrumentalists; Jerry Newman recorded pianist Thelonious Monk performing the tune in 1941 at Minton's Playhouse, a nightclub closely connected with early bebop, and he subsequently recorded it several times.
