He Never Said a Mumblin' Word (also known as They Hung Him on a Cross, Mumblin' Word, Crucifixion, and Easter) is an African-American Spiritual folk song of unknown origin. It became popular in 1871 with the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and gained a wider audience through noted music educator Nathaniel Clark Smith.  The text narrates the events of the crucifixion.  This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with an acoustic double bass providing accompaniment.  The double bass part could be played on an electric keyboard capable of achieving that pizz. bass sound. This toe-tapping arrangement is based on a lesser-known traditional African American Spiritual melody that I fell in love with immediately upon encountering it. The arrangement is accessible to good high school choirs and average college/university groups and is sure to please all audiences. The shaker part can easily be taken up by a non-percussionist from within the choir.
