Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.821200 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Gordon Thornett. Folk,World. Octavo. 16 pages. Gordon John Thornett #3018305. Published by Gordon John Thornett (A0.821200). These simple folksong arrangements were made for two community choirs based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, but they would be equally suitable for school choirs or other groups. Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off. The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation! The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1323225 Composed by Cornish folk tune. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Advent,Christmas,Folk,Holiday,Sacred. 10 pages. Con Spirito Music #911489. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1323225). “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen†is an English traditional carol dating, perhaps, to the 16th or 17th century. A manuscript, ca. 1650, contains a version with the first line, “Sit you merry gentlemen†and the refrain, “O tidings of comfort and joy.†The earliest known printed edition of the carol is a London broadsheet dated 1760, in which the first line is the familiar “God rest ye merry, gentlemen.†By the 19th century, the carol was well-known, with Charles Dickens referencing it in his 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol. The phrase “God rest you merry†in the first line is an archaic idiom meaning “God grant you peace and happiness.†William Shakespeare used the phrase “rest you merry†in his plays, “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Juliet,†both from the 1590s; but Dickens recorded the phrase as “God bless you, merry gentlemen†in A Christmas Carol. The tune adapted for use in this arrangement was at the time of its notation a wordless, nameless melody noted in 1905 by folk song collector E. Quintrell from the singing of a Mr. Boaden in Cornwall, England. The tune was sent to Lucy Broadwood, editor of the Journal of the Folk-Song Society, who decided that it fit the ballad, “The Maid in Bedlam,†and published the tune and text together. Gustav Holst later arranged the tune as Song without Words ‘I'll Love My Love’†in his Second Suite in F for Military Band, Op. 28, No. 2 (1911) and again as “I Love My Love†in his 6 Choral Folksongs, Op. 36 (1916). Set in F minor (Dorian), the tune brings a contemplative tone to the text, with the high point of the refrain being the subdominant Bb major chord on the word “joy.†The rich, dark timbre of solo clarinet (part included) on introduction, interludes, and ending adds to this tone. SATB voices (with some divisi on soprano and tenor), piano, Bb clarinet©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). A beautiful winter ballad written by acclaimed English folk singer Laura Marling, in an a cappella vocal version originally arranged for The Swingles. Led by a wonderfully expressive solo for mezzo-soprano, the rhythmically intricate backing parts weave in melodic references to the traditional Christmas tune 'Coventry Carol'. The result is an atmospheric, tender, warm hug of an arrangement, perfect for the holiday repertoire of advanced groups looking for a challenge.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1011383 Composed by New England Folksong. Arranged by Derek Larson. A Cappella,Contemporary,Folk,Traditional. Octavo. 7 pages. Derek Larson #3242161. Published by Derek Larson (A0.1011383). An a cappella setting for SATB chorus with some splits within the parts of allegedly one of the first ballads to come from the Northeastern American colonies. Though the comedic text and music are more common, this public domain tune and story are arranged here to dramatically tell the tragic story of a young man whose life as an adult was just beginning when he was struck by a poisonous serpent as he mowed a field alone. Choirs will love the wistful melody and harmonies found in this rich arrangement of a piece of colonial history.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1349231 Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Sacred,Traditional. 16 pages. Con Spirito Music #933976. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1349231). Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.†The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1307911 Composed by traditional pre-18th century English Christmas carol. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. Celtic,Christmas,Folk,Irish,Standards. 23 pages. Scott S. Stewart #897170. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1307911). “Gloucestershire Wassailâ€, is an old song, sung around the Feast of Yule, by parties who go about dressed with boughs and ribbons, carrying a bowl, which they expect to be filled with beer or cider, and a toast put therein.  It is still customary in many parts of England to hand round the wassail, or health-bowl, on New Year’s Eve. The tune of this song is traditional popular music of the day – a universal favourite (tune) in Gloucestershire.  This arrangement of “Gloucestershire Wassailâ€, traditionally strophic in structure, has been changed to a rondo form with the original popular tune serving as the refrain or chorus and the text of the many verses serving as just that – a verse, giving emphasis to the text as sung by carousing, rural merry-makers to their feudal lords.  It is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:55+-.
