Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.828270

Arranged by Greg Link. A Cappella,Folk. Octavo. 4 pages. Greg Link #6083183. Published by Greg Link (A0.828270).

With a beautiful melody shared across the choir, this is a tranquil arrangement of the traditional Scottish folk song 'The Water is Wide' (O Waly, Waly). The piece incorporates a calm, lilting choral accompaniment underneath the popular tune which can be sung either as a solo or in small groups if required. Written for a cappella SSATB, the score also includes a useful chord chart for piano or guitar which can be used as a rehearsal aid or in performance too if needed. Perfect as a choral folk arrangement alongside other folk songs or as a peaceful contrast to more upbeat numbers, this piece is ideal for high school choirs or a cappella groups and would be useful for exploring a blended choral sound and long sustained phrases.

Arranged by Greg Link, a London-based professional singer, arranger and workshop leader.

Composed by Scottish Traditional. Arranged by Desmond Earley. A Cappella,Celtic,Irish,Traditional. 7 pages. Seolta Music Limited #882395. Published by Seolta Music Limited (A0.1291815).

For decades the passage from the old to the new year at midnight has been celebrated by singing Robert Burns’ poem. This piece was first printed in 1788 although the author himself acknowledged that its origins lie in an earlier Scots-language ballad printed in 1711 by James Wilson.

In this graceful arrangement, we hear the standard English version of the text set to a traditional Scottish melody. Sopranos and altos predominate in the four verses, sometimes in unison and, at times, underpinned by a Scottish sounding drone. In contrast, the chorus is richly sung by the full complement of voices.

Notes

Skye Boat Song is one of my favoryte folk songs from the British Isles. Skye refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod.

SKU: A0.1243842

Composed by Charles Wesley and Trad. Scottish Melody. Arranged by Nathaniel Hontz. Christian,Folk,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. 10 pages. TigerSong LLC #838814. Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1243842).

Charles Wesley's poem Jacob Wrestling is better known by its first line, Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown. A sermon in itself, the poem recontextualizes the struggle of the Old Testament story of Jacob wrestling with an angel to current believers' struggles with faith. Isaac Watts, one of the fathers of English hymnody, stated that this poem was worth all the verses [he] had written. It is set here to a traditional Scottish melody, Candler or Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, and arranged for SATB choir. It opens with a tenor soli, joined by the other voices. When the speaker makes demands of his divine opponent, the anthem modally shifts to the parallel minor. Eventually, the choir wrestles, as the four wrestling verses of the poem are sung at the same time in a 4-part canon. Finally, the speaker's epiphany is accompanied by a key change and a joyous conclusion in 4-part harmony.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Celtic,Folk,Historic,Irish. 10 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #908371. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1319814).

This is one of the most well-known of all British folksongs and refers to real historical events. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.

The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers.

The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SATB arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 – D5; Alto: A3 (only once) – B4; Tenor: D3–D4; Bass: G2-B3.

SKU: A0.905640

Composed by Traditional English Melody. Arranged by Daniel Steenson. 20th Century,Concert,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 7 pages. Daniel Steenson #4581035. Published by Daniel Steenson (A0.905640).

A unique setting for voice and piano featuring a sacred poetic text, Isaiah 55, from the Scottish Psalter paired with the beloved English melody, FOREST GREEN, originally harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the English Hymnal.  This moderately advanced arrangement by Daniel Steenson is effective as service music or a concert piece.  The musical pulse may be felt in two (though mm. 50-63 are to be sung quasi-recitative).  Eighth notes should not be rushed.  Listen for clear voice-leading in the accompaniment (use discreet pedaling), and respond to the rise-and-fall of phrases between the voice and keyboard.

Composed by Traditional Irish/Scottish. Arranged by Brad Pierson. A Cappella,Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. 7 pages. Whateverandeveramen. #995335. Published by whateverandeveramen. (A0.1413510).

This beloved folk song is popular in both Irish and Scottish traditions. Set for SATB a cappella voices, singers will enjoy this predominately homophonic setting for its beautiful melody, straight forward harmonies, and clear statement of the text. The arrangement is provided in the key of F to make it easier to play/rehearse, but it is recommended for performance in F#.  For more information or full perusal copy contact bradleyscottpierson@gmail.com

Tempo indication and dynamic markings are intentionally absent from this arr. - conductors hould allow text and vocal range dictate musical choices.

Composed by Scottish Traditional Melody. Arranged by Joshua Shoemaker. Classical,Folk. Octavo. 12 pages. Joshua Shoemaker #4639529. Published by Joshua Shoemaker (A0.1025362).

Loch Lomond has its roots in the Jacobite uprising of 1745. This rebellion was the final and bloodiest Scottish war for independence. It ultimately failed, and many Scots were taken prisoner. Some prisoners were pardoned and freed, while others were condemned to death. It is here the song depicts two such prisoners. Both are friends, but one has been pardoned, while the other has been condemned. The song is from the point of the condemned friend, speaking to his freed friend. The condemned friend states that while his spirit will reach Lake Lomond, Loch Lomond that is, before his friend, the condemned friend's spirit will never be able to communicate with his significant other again. Whereas the freed friend has demanding physical journey home, but will be able to see his significant other again.
