KONIKONECO (SATB) is a traditional call-and-response song of the Teso people, who live in eastern Uganda and in western Kenya. The lyrics, from the Ateso language combined with borrowings from other languages and dialects, roughly translates as “Let us celebrate our schools, our learning, and our empowerment.” The piano accompaniment suggests the arpeggios typical of Ugandan hand-held harps (a’dungu). Other instruments, especially drums and shakers, may be added to the accompaniment, and the choral part itself includes body percussion in one section. A unique arrangement of two pieces that were blended together for the Christmas season.  Rise Up Shepherd and Follow and Star in the East.  The arrangement is for two basic parts for women and men, set up to be accessible for both soprano and alto, and tenor and baritone.  They are accompanied by oboe, clarinet and piano.  Flute could easily play the oboe part with perhaps raising an octave here and there. The piece has a bit of jazz feeling to it contrasting with the Shaker plain song of the Star in the East. Unfortunately on the recording, the program doesn't make it possible to have the voices sing the words. Only oohs.

This arrangement for SATB, piano and percussion is designed to minimize page turns by providing separate parts for the choir and the piano. A traditional full score is also included for the conductor, and which may be useful to the accompanist during rehearsals.The percussion element is largely an improvised groove, but it is nonetheless indespensable for providing rhythmic vitality throughout the song. The piano part alone, if played verbatim, will not be suffcient. For the core drum sound, I recommend a djembe or a pair of congas. Another percussionist, if available, could add a shaker to the mix.
