Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Jon Arterton. African. Octavo. 11 pages. Jon Arterton #6695865. Published by Jon Arterton (A0.777045).

This is a rousing set of three wonderful songs from Africa. Wana Baraka is a traditional song from Kenya: Those who pray have blessings. Alleluia. They have peace, joy and well-being. Tshotsholoza is a freedom song from South Africa: Go forward to the mountains. The train is coming from South Africa. You are running away on those mountains. Amavolovolo is a traditional Zulu dowry song. In past times it told the story of people afraid to go to Kwamashu because there were so many guns there, but today it’s sung joyously at weddings and other ceremonies.

By Traditional. By Traditional. Arranged by Jay Jordan. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Octavo. 29 pages. Pro Creations Music #784034. Published by Pro Creations Music (A0.1184315).

Irish folk singing is a wonderful tradition spanning hundreds of years and includes subjects ranging from romance to resistance. Many songs were created and subsequently preserved in pubs and other informal gatherings. The three traditional songs included in this medley, Whisky in the Jar, Will You Go, Lassie, Go (Wild Mountain Thyme), and Wild Rover (No Nay Never) are popular to this day and have made their way beyond the pub to the concert stage, and even the big screen. Scored for SATB choir and a female solo in the middle song, this arrangement is easy and fun. Your choir will love singing these sure crowd-pleasers and your audience will enjoy joining in the fun when your singers encourage them to clap along in the appropriate spots.

As a Greek living in Norway for most of my adult life, and in my many years’ work as a conductor of a Norwegian choir specializing in Greek music (!), I have experienced the need to enrich the choir’s repertoire with both folk song- as well as other -arrangements of Greek music: This gave me the opportunity to share with our audiences some of the centuries-long musical heritage, as well as helping me make known to them some of the History behind the music of a country of such international historical influence in the past, and such a tourist magnet in our times.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Gordon Thornett. Folk,World. Octavo. 16 pages. Gordon John Thornett #3018305. Published by Gordon John Thornett (A0.821200).

These simple folksong arrangements were made for two community choirs based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, but they would be equally suitable for school choirs or other groups. Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off.

The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation!

The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.
