It's often associated with the Catholic prayer, but it's actually based on a work by the Scottish poet Walter Scott. Originally part of Ellens Gesang III, this gentle, melancholic melody with Latin lyrics invoking the Virgin Mary has been adapted for various instruments and choirs. Schubert didn't anticipate it becoming widely known as Ave Maria; the original title was Ellens Gesang III: Hymn to the Virgin. This beautiful composition is performed in various settings and continues to inspire listeners, showcasing Schubert's brilliance as a composer.
