Henry Van Dyke's text illustrates the relentless nature of time and its many blessings and perils.  The staccato repetition of time is is constant throughout the work, and while everybody's notes may happen at different times and may seem odd by themselves they wll fit together in performance.  Every voice part gets a chance to shine in their own line from the poem and leading the other voices to modulate toward a new key center each time.  Though seemingly a cappella, the one-hand piano part simulates the never-ending ticking of the clock while also being a root to the chording harmonizations happening with the voices.  A unique challenge for advanced high school and collegiate choirs.  Enjoy!

When The Greatest Showman opened in theatres in 2017, the world instantly fell in love with the music and lyrics of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (collectively known as Pasek & Paul).  Their work has been featured in other great films such as La La Land and the 2019 remake of Disney's Aladdin, as well as on stage in shows such as Dear Evan Hansen and Dogfight.  Arguably the biggest ensemble song of the movie, Come Alive will have your show choir not being able to contain themselves from the impressive lyrics and rhythmic cadences in the vocal lines.  This is definitely not one to miss!

Written in memory of Erich Fried (1921-1988), a writer who wrote the libretto for Goehr's opera Arden Must Die and whose poems were set in Warngedichte (op. 22), Carol for St Steven is a short and playful carol about St Steven as a servant boy in King Herod’s Hall. Seeing the Star and realising that Jesus has been born, the boy tells King Herod whose overreaction results in Steven being stoned to death (explaining why the Vigil of St Stephen takes place on Christmas Night). With a treble soloist singing the lines of Steven and a bass singing the parts of Herod, Goehr’s carol for St Steven is an alternative carol in many senses, but one that would be ideal for both amateur and professional choirs looking for new repertoire.
