After singing the excellent Britten setting of this traditional song I was moved to write various versions of my own: The choral versions are more sophisticated than the original but different from and possibly rather easier than the Britten arrangement. The voice and guitar version has a more interesting guitar part than the traditional guitar chords. The sound samples are sung by Matthew Curtis of choraltracks.com for the choral versions and by Margaret Jackson-Roberts with the composer on guitar for the voice and guitar version. Several unusual techniques are used throughout the work such as different types of throat singing, overtone singing, multiphonics, vocal percussion, extreme registers etc. It reveals some sounds and colors yet unknown to the world of vocal music. The work is based on a short excerpt of the psalm 50 (Domine labia mea aperies). There is a text accumulation process throughout the work, at the beginning there are just sounds, then phonemes assemble, words appear and closer to the end the full text is revealed.
