Cradle Song for SATB Choir and Piano
Words by: William Blake
Music by: Russell Ronnebaum

About the piece:

William Blake’s serene language inspired this dramatic setting of his poem Cradle SongThe piece opens with a constantly descending scale as a mother sings to her sleeping child.  As more voices are layered in, the texture becomes increasingly lush, but still soothing.

The third stanza of text is marked with peaceful harp-like figures (as thy softest limbs I feel) while the voices take over the calming decent into deeper, more peaceful sleep.  The mother’s concern suddenly changes as the descending scale transforms and (the cunning wiles that creep) set in.

Anticipation of escaping the terror of potential nightmares escalates as the ascending textures grow more tense and dissonant.  The tension finally peaks with a breathless silence before resolving with (then the dreadful night shall break).

The final phrase of the piece is a slightly transformed iteration of the opening vocal phrase and is a subtle nod to Johannes Brahms’ Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht, more commonly known as Brahms’ Lullaby.

“Madrigals for the Seasons†was composed especially for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor. “Spring†by William Blake was first published in his 1789 collection “Songs of Innocence.†It is a celebration of the arrival of Spring, exploring the harmony of man with the natural world. The setting introduces the piano into the cycle and is in a lively compound meter. This madrigal features practically the only melismas in the cycle on the word “merrily,†bringing the set to a joyous conclusion.

SKU: A0.1008083

Composed by Connie Pwll Walck Tyler. A Cappella,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 5 pages. Connie Tyler #4629301. Published by Connie Tyler (A0.1008083).

This four part a cappella song is based on the first four lines of Auguries of Innocence by William Blake:
To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower,
hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.
The verse repeats four times with four different choral settings.  The recording is electronic and uses choral oohs for the voices. There is a piano abstract if needed.
This is very meditative music and would work well in religious settings as well as non-religious settings.  An excellent time to use it would be for Earth Day.
