SKU: A0.918667

Composed by Jenni Brandon. A Cappella,Contemporary. Octavo. 12 pages. Jenni Brandon Music #2007297. Published by Jenni Brandon Music (A0.918667).

The Giver of Stars for SATB a cappella (JB 124) by Jenni Brandon.. Duration approximately 5 minutes. Poem by Amy Lowell. The Giver of Stars speaks of joy and pleasure, expressed through both the quiet reflection and grand excitement of these feelings within the work. At times the work moves forward joyfully, reveling in beauty, and at other times it builds slowly towards a moment of arrival. This work represents an ecstatic joy and freedom of expression, and the wonderful sense of being overwhelmed by something too beautiful. Commissioned by the Young New Yorkers Chorus.

SKU: A0.1137245

Composed by John Ross. Classical,Patriotic. Octavo. 12 pages. John Ross #737445. Published by John Ross (A0.1137245).

“For the Fallen” was written for Bec Beall and her choir “Lux Alba” and was premiered by them in 2019 at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, NSW, Australia. The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old”) has become known as the “Ode of Remembrance”, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Post”. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle” portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust” compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plain”. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight” (reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The work concludes with an alternate setting of the opening movement “They shall not grow old”. A version of this suite with piano accompaniment is also available on this website.

My song
Farewell
Two compositions to lyrics by Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore: My Song and Farewell. Enrico Miaroma, Italian composer and choral conductor, writes about the pieces:

Farewell was composed in 2011 for a youth choir of 45 young adults, working and having fun together in Arco (Trentino), for one marvellous week together with Gary Graden and myself. My aim was to compose a piece that young choristers would appreciate after intense and joyful days together. Through my music I wanted to share the range of emotions and the hardship of parting when they were to go home to their native countries again. The choice of such a beautiful and evocative text helped me a great deal to achieve this.
Farewell is recorded by S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir and Gary Graden on the cd To the Field of Stars (Footprint Records FRCD 083).

My Song is like a little brother to Farewell. From the very beginning, I had a strong feeling that the assonance between the words of the title, 'my song', and 'my son', was intended by the poet. Throughout the composing process, this kept coming back to me, bringing my little son, Giovanni, who is four years old, to mind. I would like My song to be a gift from a father to his son, for his future life: 'This song of mine, my child, will wind its music around you'.

John Quinn, MusicWeb International on Enrico Miaroma and Farewell:
The choral writing is rich and he harnesses the emotions in the text most effectively. It's an eloquent piece, very well written for voices and it conveys well, I think, some of the emotions of valediction, including dignity..

The Children of the World (July 1969)
Words by Phil Cummings, music by Glyn Lehmann

For children in nineteen sixty nine
There were new games to play
To the children of that far off time
There was wonder in that July Day

A rocket flew with fire and flame
Across a wide open sky
On TV screens around the world
Children saw that rocket fly

Young hearts beat a rhythm
Great minds played their part
The children of the world held their breath
As Armstrong placed a print upon their hearts

At night the children gazed at the stars
Their faces lit by silver moonlight
And tried to imagine the the view
Of those on that Apollo flight

Kids flew in missions to save the world
Created games and stories and schemes
Their bikes flew like asteroids
Treehouses were rockets in dreams

The children of the world in streets everyday
Saw flickering screens in shop window displays
Photos without colour on newspaper spreads
Books about space strewn across beds

Composed by Pekka Juhani Hannikainen. Sheet music. Octavo. 3 pages. Oxford University Press Digital #9780193549487. Published by Oxford University Press Digital (OX.9780193549487).

ISBN 9780193549487.

Copyright issue with text. Tuikkikaa, oi joulun tA$?htAPset is one of the most popular of all Finnish Christmas carols. Its text was written by Elsa Koponen, a teacher, who remarked on how eagerly her young pupils sang the Christmas songs, their eyes shining as brightly as the stars in the sky. This joy is tinged with sadness in the mournfully beautiful melody, composed for this text by Pekka Juhani Hannikainen (published in 1918), and in Kostiainen's somewhat. nostalgic harmonization.
