Thanks, John.  I Can See Clearly Now is a song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Johnny Nash.  It was the lead single from his album, I Can See Clearly Now (1972), and achieved success in the United States and the United Kingdom when it was released in 1972, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box charts.  It also reached number one in Canada and South Africa.  After Nash wrote and composed the original version, he recorded it in London with members of the Fabulous Five Inc., and produced it himself.  The song's arrangements and style are both heavily laced with reggae influences, as Nash had earlier collaborated with Bob Marley and his approach drew strongly from Marley's reggae style.

Written for the Early Light Academy Spotlight Singers (South Jordan, UT) and taken from actual responses from the students they were asked, when people look at you, what do you want them to see? This song is intended to be a very personal expression for the singers as well as for the audience.

I see: eyes and a face, hands and feet
You see: the same
I see: tears and a smile, working, moving
You see: the same
I see: pain, joy, strength, endurance
You see, you think you see-but you can’t name it.
I see you, please see me.
When you look at me, see a person who isn’t afraid to be-- just be.
I am tall or I am small, but I am happy to be me.
I may be confident or meek, I may be really strong or weak,
And if it changes week to week, it doesn’t matter.
What matters is that you see me.
When you listen, notice that my voice may sometimes raise the roof
And other times it may seem aloof when I cannot find the proof
Of what is truth and what is fair, but listen ‘til you hear me share

With a text taken from Emily Brontë's poem, The Night is Darkening Round Me, this setting represents an individual who is feeling increasingly trapped and helpless in their situation, and could even depict feelings of depression. Even the key changes in the work bring the listener through a full cycle and sets them up to repeat this spiral forever. Unlike some of my other works, this work is not intended to be uplifting, but is instead an ernest acknowledgement of the pain some people endure. This work is written for SATB choir (a cappella) and is approximately 3 minutes in duration. The choral parts are largely diatonic and should be accessible to most audiences/ensembles.
