Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Light�) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn� and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.� The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Irish Eyes Are Smiling is a timeless standard that was first published in 1912 when such tributes to a romanticised Ireland were popular in the UK and the USA. During World War One, Ithe song was recorded by John McCormack (tenor). It was destined to became a familiar standard for generations. More than 200 recordings have since been made, featuring such artists as Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.This arrangement includes the original opening verse, plus a suprising chorus set in a two-beat meter instead of a waltz. The traditional waltz style appears later, including the option of audience participation. The harmonies are not difficult to sing, but the arrangement can be simplified easily by selecting sections in unison with the piano accompaniment carrying the chords.Kathleen McGuire's arrangement was originally created for the Various Voices Choral Festival in Dublin, Ireland. It is sure to bring a tear of joy or nostalgia to the eye of anyone from the Emerald Isle.

I actually liked this group, even though they were not commercially successful. This song was released as a single. However it fell short, mainly because the B-Side was accepted better, Hello, It's Me. This song is a rocker and a typical 60s rock song. Rock was beginning to take hold, however, a lot of bands added a smooth section in their songs to get more appeal. This song is no exception to that rule. The song is unusual in that the section that leads to the final chorus has several time signature changes, which was not the norm for the time. At times the voices will be at their high limit, to keep the feel of the original recording. This song still rocks with the best of them. Duration = 2:51.
