Composed by D. M. Gardner. Christian,Concert,Contemporary. Octavo. 55 pages. D. M. Gardner Music #481051. Published by D. M. Gardner Music (A0.799654).

SATB, Piano, Horns, Timpani, Percussion

BE ADVISED, IF YOU SIT IN THE FRONT ROW, YOU MAY WANT TO BRING A RAINCOAT!

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. (Gen 7:11-12 KJV)

Quietly the first drops of rain begin to fall... One, two... The wind begins to stir, becoming audible. And in a moment it seems thousands of heavy raindrops fall upon the mountains and hills and plains, as though a veil of water had suddenly descended upon the earth from the heavens. Fountains of the Deep musically portrays the events of the Bible concerning the great waters in a tumultuous storm of notes thundering from the grand piano and percussion. Simultaneously, the choir calls out for help while being tossed by the tempestuous seas, swallowed by a great fish, and chased to the edge of the sea by Pharaoh.

The text in Fountains of the Deep is a mixed narrative that combines scripture with an imagined exclamation at the cataclysmic events of the day. Still comes the rain, still comes the rain, never ceasing! Whether it was one man, thousands, or all of mankind, the Lord has chosen to use the great depths of the sea to do his Will. This dramatic sonic reenactment brings the listener as close to the action as one would wish to get.

When your well is dry, your life seems in a drought,

When problems loom large, and nothing works out,

When your soul is parched, you’re weary and tired,

There’s no spark in the coals that once flowed with fire.

Then…Come to the fountain.

(Chorus)

The Fountain of Life that never runs dry,

The source of all hope wipes all tears from the eye,

God’s Living Water, always clean and pure,

Will quench your thirst; His promise is sure.

Without Living Water the soul shrivels and withers,

Heed the Lord’s call: Come to Me, Hither.

Without Living Water problems keep growing,

So come to the artesian. It’s peace ever flowing.

So…Come to the fountain

Repeat chorus

SKU: A0.944041

Composed by Ofer Ben-Amots, composer and librettist. Contemporary. Octavo. 28 pages. The Composer's Own Press #4799263. Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944041).

Composer’s Notes:

The Hebrew text stems from a mystical Kabalistic source attributed to the great Hassidic Rabbi Nachman of Breslav. The words tell us, in a poetic and metaphysical manner, about the mechanism that moves the world and keeps the universe alive: there is a singing fountain at the end of the world and a pounding heart at the other end. The fountain and the heart are attracted to each other and wish to get closer, but as soon as they move from their place they lose sight of each other. Once they cannot see each other anymore the heart would stop beating and the fountain would stop singing. Thus, they both stay in their places and sing to each other. Their song spreads over the entire world and sparks of light emanate from it. When the sparks are woven together they produce enough Time for a new day to be created. The music mirrors the soft pounding of the heart and the spreading of this magical melody.

SKU: A0.1473148

Composed by P.D. Arranged by Jesse Ayers. Christian,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. 46 pages. Jesse Auers #1050770. Published by Jesse Auers (A0.1473148).

A suite of four old hymns (each is available separately): Softly and Tenderly, There Is a Fountain, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, and an uptempo Amazing Grace. (See Youtube link for a medley of excerpts from each.)

I. SOFTLY AND TENDERLY
A quiet setting expressing the longing of the Savior for us to “come home.” Beginning with unison men over a simple Copland-esque accompaniment, it contains both the traditional harmonization familiar to audiences, as well as some brief, striking sojourns to remote tonalities used to underscore texts such as “though we have sinned He has mercy and pardon.”

II. THERE IS A FOUNTAIN – ARE YOU WASHED
An a cappella medley of the title hymn along with “Are You Washed?” and “Nothing But The Blood.” It begins slowly and softly with unison women singing the opening phrase “There is a fountain….” Later, the tempo picks up into a camp-meeting style for the other two hymns.

III. WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS
A cappella. Austere and stately. The first verse is set with the traditional harmonization, the second verse is dramatically re-harmonized to paint the text “See from His head, His hands, His side.”

IV. AMAZING GRACE COLLAGE
A joyous, celebratory, up-tempo setting that weaves numerous quotes of other hymns into the fabric of John Newton’s beloved text.

Composed by Text: Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) Tune: Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914. Arranged by Ken Litton. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. 11 pages. Artist of Note, Inc. #1066874. Published by Artist of Note, Inc. (A0.1490010).

Whiter Than the Snow/Eden Reeder Latta  - Henry Southwick Perkins BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN
arr. Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!
From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).
The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original.  The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.
The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.
I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.
