He studied at the Paris ConservatoireĀ and won first prize in harmony and later became a professor of harmony at the conservatoire. In 1866 he won the Grand Prix de RomeĀ with his cantataĀ DalilaĀ which was performed at the Paris OperaĀ in 1867. Maurice RavelĀ and Jacques IbertĀ were among his many distinguished students. This arrangement of Andalouse Ā from his 25 pieces Op 20 is for oboe and piano and would be suitable as an additional repertoire piece for an aspiring oboist.
