La Pavane pour une infante défunte est à l'origine une pièce pour piano de Maurice Ravel composée en 1899 et dédiée à la princesse de Polignac. La création de la version pianistique eut lieu à Paris le 5 avril 1902 par le pianiste Ricardo Viñes. Son exécution dure environ six minutes. La Pavane a été orchestrée par Ravel en 1910. L'œuvre porte la référence M.19 dans le catalogue des œuvres du compositeur établi par le musicologue Marcel Marnat. In this version, the composition was arranged for Oboe and Piano by Harry Walker.

This is one of the most well-known of all British folksongs and refers to real historical events. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skye�) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  

 The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boat�) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king� to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.� The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  

 In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. 

The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. In this arrangement for oboe and piano much of the piece is written in the low register.

Song to the Moon, from the opera Rusalka, a fairy tale about a water nymph who falls in love with a prince. Rusalka wishes to become mortal so she can live her dream, and sings to the moon to tell the Prince of her love.

This easy arrangement for oboe and piano was written to be uncomplicated to perform and understand the structure of the piece. It can be freely played by beginning students, because of the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not prevent it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.
