This work for oboe and piano is not at all a set of variations on a theme, because the oboe always plays, without embellishment, the same sixteen-measure sequence four times. The four first measure of the this theme are played once as an intro- duction. The piano, however, is asked to create a different atmosphere each time the theme returns, replacing the meaning of the words. It is therefore the job of the oboist to find a different way of presenting the same theme, sequence by sequence, which is not entirely the easiest thing to do!

In this arrangement the oboe mainly leads, but when the melody moves to the piano the oboe has an attractive counter-melody. Ideal High School student repertoire and with a performance duration of around two and a half minutes, a great recital piece. The full score has phrasing suggested and a one page oboe part attached. It was first recorded in print around 1800 and the lyrics were notably captured by the Welsh folklorist Robert Bryan (1858–1920). The song's title simply means lullaby (suo = lull; cân = song).
