Featured in the 1980's Steven Spielberg film Empire of the Sun, this beautiful traditional Welsh lullaby melody became very well known. In this arrangement the oboe mainly leads, but when the melody moves to the piano the oboe has an attractive counter-melody. Ideal High School student repertoire and with a performance duration of around two and a half minutes, a great recital piece. The full score has phrasing suggested and a one page oboe part attached. This is an arrangement of the famous Welsh lullaby. This work for oboe and piano is not at all a set of variations on a theme, because the oboe always plays, without embellishment, the same sixteen-measure sequence four times. The four first measure of the this theme are played once as an intro- duction. The piano, however, is asked to create a different atmosphere each time the theme returns, replacing the meaning of the words. It is therefore the job of the oboist to find a different way of presenting the same theme, sequence by sequence, which is not entirely the easiest thing to do!

Wales is often referred to as “The Land of Song” and singing has always been an important part of Welsh culture. There are many hundreds of Welsh folk songs, some of which are now recognized internationally. The three songs in this publication were originally from a set of six arranged for mezzo-soprano and piano in 1963 when the arranger, Colin Kirkpatrick was a music student in London. These new arrangements for oboe and piano have retained many features of the original but have been slightly adapted for instrumental use. They would make an excellent addition to any intermediate oboe recital or encore piece. The three songs are:

2. Migildi Magildi (Song at the Smithy)

3. Si Hei Lwli, ’Mabi (Sleep, my Lovely Baby)

An arrangement for Oboe & Piano of the Welsh lullaby Suo Gan.

Suo Gân (Welsh pronunciation: [sɨɔ ɡɑ�n]) is a traditional Welsh lullaby written by an anonymous composer.

It was first recorded in print around 1800 and the lyrics were notably captured by the Welsh folklorist Robert Bryan (1858–1920). The song's title simply means lullaby (suo = lull; cân = song). God, That Madest Earth And Heaven, and For the Fruits of His Creation, are just two popular hymn texts associated with this traditional Welsh folk tune. This gentle arrangement is well suited within a service of worship and is also great high school student repertoire in the classroom.
