Derek Hasted writes Ideal for those with limited experience of guitar or those with limited time to rehearse, this little collection of 6 less-familiar Christmas tunes offers some charming little pieces which are in the Public Domain. They are equally suited to 4 players or a large ensemble.

Although there is no fingering, the majority is playable in First Position.

Derek Hasted writes This delightful tune is a traditional Thuringian Folk Melody, and has become a well-loved German Carol with the English translation Sweeter the bells never sound than at Christmas time.

This piece of music is ideal for a novice mixed-ability guitar ensemble - it would be an ideal instrumental for a School Christmas concert, but is also in a good key for accompanying singers.

Two Guitar 1 parts are provided - you can use either or both, depending on the skill of the players in your ensemble. Guitar 1b is all first (or second) position, whereas Guitar 1a is all in VII position - the part score is thoroughly fingered.

The other parts are all straightforward.

But as well as being a fantastic piece for a school concert, it is also great in an adult concert, since it has immediate audience appeal and needs minimal preparation in experienced hands.

Derek Hasted writes Although this piece was made famous by Mike Oldfield, it first appeared in John Playford’s “The Dancing Master†in 1701, and also found fame in the hands of Ralph Vaughan Williams.

My arrangement starts with a slow, teasing, introduction, and introduces the famous melody very slowly and gently. “What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor†also makes a few appearances before we let the brakes off and burst into the tune that many people know.

The music isn’t hard to play, and each line has some music interest, though only Guitar 1 has to venture up the neck.

It’s ideal for a mixed ability ensemble, and runs at nearly five minutes, to make a substantial concert item that builds up and up.

This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences.

I hope you enjoy this piece as much as HAGO did!

Derek Hasted writes Ever wondered what would have happened if the carol We Three Kings had been composed in Spain? Now you can find out with this accessible, tongue-in-cheek arrangement of the traditional Christmas piece but in Malagueña style.... Full of bursting energy and driving Malagueña bass lines, there are also wistful moments with the tune is handed around the ensemble. Rodrigo, he of the Concierto de Aranjuez, makes a tiny cameo appearance too.

Great for Christmas concerts - easy to play and a real toe-tapper which lets the guitar do what the guitar does best!

AFRICA (Toto) - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensemble
Written for classical guitar, also suits acoustic or electric guitar

Derek Hasted writes I wanted to make this fantastic piece accessible to as many guitarists as I could. To do that, Iâ??ve moved the key down one tone to make the keys in this piece familiar ones. My arrangement will suit a mixed ability ensemble from early intermediate to intermediate. 

Guitar 4 has the bottom string tuned down to D, and thereâ??s a bass clef version of the same line to suit a normally tuned bass guitar or upright bass. You can have one or both lines in your performance.

Iâ??ve deleted a tiny piece of repetition near the end - the words change in the original but the music doesnâ??t - as an instrumental there was too much of the same phrase! The piece finishes with a final chord instead of a fade to nothing, as it works so much better in concert.

The resulting piece still runs for four and a half minutes. Thereâ??s a set of repeat marks so that the music will fit on a normal music stand without page turns.

Derek Hasted writes The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra used to open some of its concerts with this piece, and itâ??s a great piece for an audience of non-guitarists, drawing them in to the world of music that doesnâ??t fit well on a single guitar.

Itâ??s ideal for a school concert but would also suit an adult ensemble with modest experience.

Set in swing time, thereâ??s just one little piece of percussion where there are three sharp raps to the front of the guitar - take this on the wing of the bridge and thereâ??s no change of marking the soft wood of the front.

School Teachers - you could consider splitting Guitar 3 into two single melodic lines - some players playing stems up and some playing stems down, and then this piece will suit players from almost complete beginners upwards.

ETERNAL FLAME - 4 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE

Derek Hasted writes This is an arrangement of the lovely Eternal Flame by The Bangles. It's based on a version I wrote for Hampshire Guitar Orchestra which used 4 sizes of classical guitar.

This arrangement has been re-worked to suit a conventional classical guitar quartet or large ensemble.

It's easy to play and locks together well.

Guitar 3 requires a Capo on the seventh fret (or an Alto Guitar could be used instead).
If you have a large ensemble, then Guitar 1 can be played with solo, tutti and divisi sections to add tonal and dynamic contrast.

It's probably going to have the audience swaying in time to the music!

Derek Hasted writes I first arranged this lovely tune for The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and my arrangement here produces the same big sound from an intermediate guitar quartet or large ensemble. School teachers will find this is an ideal piece for an end of semester concert, and adult ensembles will find it makes a restful interlude piece in a full-length concert.

My arrangement comprises two verses and a Coda, but either verse could be repeated to make an even longer performance piece. There are no page turns.

Guitar 1 suits the seventh position, and guitar 4 (which is in two voices) is all in the first and second position. The middle parts could be taken in a variety of positions, and I have left the fingering for you to choose. There are many places where the faster notes can be slurred, and this does make a positive difference to the overall fluidity of the piece.

There are suggested dynamics which make the piece come alive.

Derek Hasted writes This is a lovely piece for guitar quartet or for a larger ensemble. This arrangement starts off in the key of A, with a deep, dark tune (as you'll hear on the soundfile). As each of the 4 verses enters, the texture thickens a little, and between verses two and three there is a big and uplifting key change and the tune climbs over an octave higher. With lots of imitation and a gentle flowing rhythm, this piece has something for each of the players to make their own. In the final verse, big flowing Spanish-sounding chords generate a massive wall of sound and the piece concludes with a slowed down end to the tune.

This arrangement has featured in concerts in the UK for many years and it's become a real favorite with the audiences.

Derek Hasted writes My arrangement of this now-timeless classic is accessible to quartets and large ensembles of all abilities from â??early intermediateâ? upwards. Ideal for school concerts or adult Christmas celebrations.

Unlike many arrangements it includes Irving Berlinâ??s original introduction (but you can start at Letter B if you want to omit it).

There are no page turns in the part scores.

Guitar 4 has a few double stops and is in treble clef but also (with no double stopping) in bass clef for a deeper sound. You can include both parts if you want!

There is minimal fingering because most of the piece can be played in first position (to suit an ensemble with limited experience) or higher up the neck (for a rounder tone to suit a more experienced group).

Please add dynamics and phrasing to make the performance â??yoursâ?.
