Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Film/TV,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 15 pages. Derek Hasted #4793235. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.797751).

COWKEEPER'S TUNE (TV's Woodentops theme) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This arrangement is taken from a String Nonet version (2 first violins, 2 second violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and 1 double bass).

It makes a great quartet for a guitar ensemble of modest ability, and those with more experience will be able to generate a wonderful soundscape with a rich clear overall sound.

The pitch range of the original has to be compressed onto the pitch range of a guitar ensemble and I’ve achieved this by raising the lower voices, rather than altering the top voice, where the piece calls for a lighter texture.

The dynamics of the original are retained in my arrangement, but the fingering is left to the players... Playing the lower parts up the neck will give a rich, cello-like, sound, but a first position performance will be robust and will use many familiar guitar shapes.

This is a charming, gentle, pastoral piece and the sweet sound of the guitar suits it well.

Those UK players of a certain age might just remember that this music introduced The Woodentops, a children’s string-puppet TV series which ran in black and white from 1955 till 1957, and was regularly repeated until 1973.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

SKU: A0.1463461

Composed by John Dowland (1563-1626). Arranged by Clive Lane. Classical,Renaissance. Score and Parts. 31 pages. Clive Lane #1042183. Published by Clive Lane (A0.1463461).

Lachrimæ or Seven Tears figured in Seven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, set forth for the lute, viols, or violons, in five parts’ is a collection of instrumental music composed by John Dowland and published in 1604. Apart from the sheer quality of the music, it is notable as the first publication of English music scored specifically for strings and for lute, and the first to have used the table layout for consort music.

There are seven Lachrimae pavans, which are variations on the theme that Dowland had already made famous as a lute solo and a song (“Flow my tears”).

The “divers other” compositions are: two almans (“almands”), nine lively galliards (“galiards”), two sombre pavans, and a “funerall.”

There are 21 pieces in all and I have divided them into three books, retaining the original ordering of the pieces.

This is Book Three - five galliards and two almans:

15.  Mr Giles Hoby, his Galliard
16.  Mr Nicholas Gryffith, his Galliard
17.  Mr Thomas Collier, his Galliard
18.  Captain Piper, his Galliard
19.  Mr Bucton, his Galliard
20.  Mistress Nichol’s Alman
21.  Mr George Whitehead, his Alman

(For the other pieces, see Books One and Two)

For this arrangement for guitar quartet*, I have combined two of the parts (part three and part five) to make guitar 4 (with some minor adjustments).

Time values have been halved, and in several cases (Nos. 9,12,15,16,17,20,21), I have transposed the key to a more guitar-friendly key.

Composed by Van Decker, Ph.D. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 49 pages. Arsdale Publishing #3557109. Published by Arsdale Publishing (A0.1004525).

Complete Score & Mp3 MIDI Realization file . (no parts)

Duration: 28:15 mins. Performing Rights: BMI. Contact Email: dr.van@sbcglobal.net

While camping in Yosemite National Park, the composer, a nature lover at heart, with his classical guitar at hand, sketched a series of motifs that attempted to capture the moments of awe and wonder he felt with his stay there. These sketches were the beginnings of Van Decker's innovative work, Yosemite Suite: For Guitar Quartet.

Yosemite Suite is an advanced, modern work for concert performance. It is a somewhat programatic work as each of the five movements depict a various places or elements in Yosemite National Park. The work utilizes various compositional techniques such as: jazz harmony, whole tone scales, polytonality, metric modulation and stereo-effect voicings. This is the complete score - (all 5 movements) with an accompanying Mp3 file.  However, each movement is sold separately with the score and its 4 parts.  NOTE: Type Yosemite Suite in the search window to see all the individual movements on one page!
