Guitar Ensemble Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.797751

Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Film/TV,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 15 pages. Derek Hasted #4793235. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.797751).

COWKEEPER'S TUNE (TV's Woodentops theme) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This arrangement is taken from a String Nonet version (2 first violins, 2 second violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and 1 double bass).

It makes a great quartet for a guitar ensemble of modest ability, and those with more experience will be able to generate a wonderful soundscape with a rich clear overall sound.

The pitch range of the original has to be compressed onto the pitch range of a guitar ensemble and I’ve achieved this by raising the lower voices, rather than altering the top voice, where the piece calls for a lighter texture.

The dynamics of the original are retained in my arrangement, but the fingering is left to the players... Playing the lower parts up the neck will give a rich, cello-like, sound, but a first position performance will be robust and will use many familiar guitar shapes.

This is a charming, gentle, pastoral piece and the sweet sound of the guitar suits it well.

Those UK players of a certain age might just remember that this music introduced The Woodentops, a children’s string-puppet TV series which ran in black and white from 1955 till 1957, and was regularly repeated until 1973.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

SUSSER DIE GLOCKEN NIE KLINGEN (Sweeter the bells never sound) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This delightful tune is a traditional Thuringian Folk Melody, and has become a well-loved German Carol with the English translation Sweeter the bells never sound than at Christmas time.

This piece of music is ideal for a novice mixed-ability guitar ensemble - it would be an ideal instrumental for a School Christmas concert, but is also in a good key for accompanying singers.

Two Guitar 1 parts are provided - you can use either or both, depending on the skill of the players in your ensemble. Guitar 1b is all first (or second) position, whereas Guitar 1a is all in VII position - the part score is thoroughly fingered.

The other parts are all straightforward.

But as well as being a fantastic piece for a school concert, it is also great in an adult concert, since it has immediate audience appeal and needs minimal preparation in experienced hands.

I hope you enjoy performing this!

FANTASIA UPON A CABBAGE - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensemble
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar

Perfect for School Music Teachers and for adults with a sense of the ridiculous...

Derek Hasted writes This really does need a bit of explanation. Well, more than a bit...

As a Guitar Teacher I often have to teach beginners how to read music, and of course the seven names of the musical notes can be made to spell words. Like CABBAGE.

This, then, is a little piece of kitchen-based nonsense, cooking up a rather unappetising dish comprising cabbage, egg, beef and a lot, lot more cabbage. Iâ??ve arranged it (if that is the word) to include nods to the renaissance and baroque periods.

The scores contain mark-ups to show where a particular player has an item of food in their motif.

As well as EGG, youâ??ll find some GEG (thatâ??s scrambled egg) and a BAD EGG (and some sad music). Youâ??ll also find that the recipe includes a helping or two of BEEF.

Bach comes in for a special mention, as thereâ??s a fugue-like section where the subject comes in a fifth away from the starting key (which Iâ??ve loosely interpreted as being a recipe in a foreign language) and thereâ??s some stretti (well, just about) at the end, when the fugue subjects overlap a tiny, tiny amount. And we also pay homage to the pedal section of an organ, where the CABBAGE subject comes in down low at half the speed of the original.

The final, jazzy, chord at the end contains seven notes that collectively spell CABBAGE.

Guitar 4 is supplied in treble and bass clefs - either or both will work in a large ensemble.

So there are lots of teaching points, lots of things to ask the audience to listen out for, and a lot of mischief in a compact piece.

The musical refrain CABBAGE is not the greatest motif to work with, but on reflection, when you have this much cabbage, itâ??s much better to listen to it than have to eat it...

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

SUCCESSION TV THEME - for 4 GUITARS/Large Ensemble

Derek Hasted writes Originally set in the key C minor, this quirky, short, TV theme tends to prove something of an ear worm with those who hear it. Perfect to close the first half of a concert, then!

I've moved the piece into the key of E minor, partly to make best use of the guitar neck, and partly to allow open string harmonics to recreate effortlessly the octave jumps in the original piano chords.

I’ve added fingering where I hope it will help. The main theme moves from player to player, so that no single player has extended runs at speed and the audience will enjoy an amazing stereo effect too. The dynamics show where the tune needs to be brought out.

The original is very fast, and you may find, as I do, that it breathes better on guitar if taken 10% slower, with the bonus of making the piece just that little bit longer too.

I have also arranged this for guitar duet, in an arrangement that is slightly more demanding - find it from my website below.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

THE GLORY OF LOVE (Peter Cetera) - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensemble
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar

Derek Hasted writes This power ballad makes a wonderful concert item for a Guitar Quartet or large ensemble - it has an impressively big sound. All the verses, choruses and breaks are present except the fade out, which is replaced by a defined end to the piece (so the audience knows when to applaud!)

This arrangement sits somewhere between intermediate and advanced intermediate, with each of the parts having music in more than one voice from time to time to make a fuller sound.

Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Peter Cetera. I've changed the key slightly so the music fits the guitar neck better and the modulation in the reprise is in a familiar key for the players.

The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. But there are plenty of opportunities in the phrasing to make this ballad absolutely magical.

This piece featured in the film Karate Kid II, so you can get your chops in, either on the guitar or in a Karate competition...

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

THE MUPPETS (TV Theme Tune) - EASY GUITAR QUARTET - or large ensemble
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra used to open some of its concerts with this piece, and itâ??s a great piece for an audience of non-guitarists, drawing them in to the world of music that doesnâ??t fit well on a single guitar.

Itâ??s ideal for a school concert but would also suit an adult ensemble with modest experience.

Set in swing time, thereâ??s just one little piece of percussion where there are three sharp raps to the front of the guitar - take this on the wing of the bridge and thereâ??s no change of marking the soft wood of the front.

School Teachers - you could consider splitting Guitar 3 into two single melodic lines - some players playing stems up and some playing stems down, and then this piece will suit players from almost complete beginners upwards.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - 4 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes I first arranged this lovely tune for The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and my arrangement here produces the same big sound from an intermediate guitar quartet or large ensemble. School teachers will find this is an ideal piece for an end of semester concert, and adult ensembles will find it makes a restful interlude piece in a full-length concert.

My arrangement comprises two verses and a Coda, but either verse could be repeated to make an even longer performance piece. There are no page turns.

Guitar 1 suits the seventh position, and guitar 4 (which is in two voices) is all in the first and second position. The middle parts could be taken in a variety of positions, and I have left the fingering for you to choose. There are many places where the faster notes can be slurred, and this does make a positive difference to the overall fluidity of the piece.

There are suggested dynamics which make the piece come alive.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
