The Pifa, commonly referred to as the Pastoral Symphony is the thirteenth movement and the second of two instrumental interludes during the Messiah The name comes from shepherd pipers who would play in the streets of Rome around Christmas time. It was written for two violins and a cello.

This arrangement is for Sopranino, Soprano and Alto Recorders.

Although it is an exact canon, it is common for listeners to not notice the strict technique behind the flowing and fluid melodic lines. Historically, Ockeghem (ca. 1420-1497) is considered the musical link between Guillaume Dufay and Josquin des Prés. I have included two transpositions for recorder trio, one for 2 altos and tenor and the other for 2 tenors and bass. Of course, this could be played on 2 bass and contrabass or 2 sopranos and alto recorders. There is a manuscript of the original single line canon on the IMSLP website.
