LIKE A WHIRLING SAND CLOCKfor Clarinet, Cello and Piano (2006) Duration: 10:30 minutes Instrumentation: Clarinet, Cello and Piano PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: While composing Like a Whirling Sand Clock for clarinet, cello and piano I was occupied with the notion of leaking time process which is a micro cosmos of a larger process, best to be described as going back in time.In September 2006, I feel that the world is standing on a pivot point: on one hand, the various religious and political forces insist on rooting themselves deeper and deeper into what they see as the only truth, while in reality such ideas and especially the religious ones are extremely fundamentalist, reactionary and ill-minded. For me, such clashes of ideas and ideals are reminiscences of the dark middle-ages days and the crusades, where people killed people because of blind belief. Yet, in our days, with sophisticated mass destruction tools as developed most efficiently by humanity, one asks himself towards where we are heading and what will bring tomorrow. The feeling of evaporating, leaking time gets stronger and stronger while our era's events remind more and more what history books tells us.While imagining an ever-whirling sand clock that drops its sand grains one by one while the sand pile is collected at the upper tube and not the lower one, (thus indicating a going back in time process), one can imagine visually what I have tried to portrait with sounds.Like a Whirling Sand Clock was generously commissioned in memory of Adele and John Gray for clarinetist Chen Halevi. The Wayfaring Stranger is an Appalachian religious folk song that has been passed down in the traditions of both white and black musicians since the time of the American Revolution, through the days of slavery, emancipation and into modern times.It appeared in the important early song collections The Sacred Harp (1835) and The Christian Songster (1858) and has remained popular right up to the present day, being recorded by artists as varied as Burl Ives (1944), Joan Baez (1966), Allan Evans (1985), and Neil Young (2012).The music that follows is a set of nine variations on the musical theme of The Wayfaring Stranger. It was written for the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra Chamber Players in 2021.

I saw her on two occasions performing in Jordan Hall: once as the soloist in a Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Jordan Hall with Hugh Wolff and the NEC Philharmonic and then in an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall.  Both concerts were in the spring of 2019, and they were fantastic.  I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO.  They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording.  The next thing I did was to write a violin sonata for Minami Yoshida, the first violinist of Nico.  It is called Mi-la-mi, after her name.  Then I wrote this work for Claire, Kim’s American name.   When I asked her what was the meaning of 803 in her email address, she said that is the street number of her apartment in Korea.  So, that is how the title Trio 803 came about. Trio 803 (2020) is in five movements.  1. Adagio, Andante moderato 2. Adagio 3. Allegro con moto, TRIO 4. Adagio 5. Vivace, TRIO Enjoy!
