Arranged clarinet trio 2 Bb and one bassThe French composer Marin Marais composed the tune as a dance for his opera Alcyone of 1706, with the title Marche pour les Matelots.The tune was subsequently included in Raoul Auger Feuillet's 1706 Recueil de contredanse along with a longways proper dance, La Matelotte, which Feuillet had himself written to go with the tune.In 1710 John Essex (d. 1744) published an English translation of Feuillet's work called, For the Further Improvement of Dancing, in which the dance is given as The Female Saylor.The words were written around 1860 while William Morris, then 26, was working as an apprentice in the office of the architect, Edmund Street, presumably under the persuasion of his fellow students who at that time had a taste for part-song. It became known as the Christmas Carol Masters in This Hall (alternative title: Nowell, Sing We Clear) Gustav Holst incorporated the carol into his work Three Carols (1916–17) along with Christmas Song: On this Day and I Saw Three Ships. Holst wrote the Three Carols for amateurs singing in his Thaxted festivals.I have arranged the March and 3 of the Sailor's Airs from the opera for clarinet trio, The march is then reprised to complete the arrangement.

Instrumental arrangement of a three-voice Italian madrigal by Johannes Ciconia (1370 - 1412), which was written to celebrate the visit of the nobleman Lazzaro Guinigi from Lucca to Ciconia's employer Giangaleazzo Visconti in Padua in 1399.The lyrics are intended to flatter their guest by referring to the mythical founding of his city, Lucca, by an armored panther (or leopard), in the company of the war-god Mars.The celebration of the creature’s strong defence of the city was intended to encourage Lazzaro to accept terms for a political and military alliance between Lucca and Padua.The first stanza and ritornello have the following words in the original madrigal:Una panthera in compagnia de MarteCandido Jove d'un sereno adornoConstant è l arme chi la guarda intorno.Dando a ciaschun mortal che ne sia degnoTriumpho, gloria e parte in questo regno.Performed by The Budapest Scoring Clarinet Ensemble.

One cannot often find the origin of a folk tune or a definitive form, and bewares of modern arrangements (including mine!) The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by a clarinet with soft reed and many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The bass has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Clarinet) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Clarinet: I do not know its name. E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. A young man complains that his girlfriend never turns up for their dates. Players will choose a tempo. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. Here, the Bass sings the melody. DURATION: 11 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: Two Bb CLarinets, Bass Clarinet.
