This arrangement was requested by clarinet aficionado Ian Franklin of Hull. A rondo featuring Ukrainian folk tunes. One cannot often find the origin of a folk tune or a definitive form, and bewares of modern arrangements (including mine!) The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by a clarinet with soft reed and many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The bass has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Clarinet) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Clarinet: I do not know its name. E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. A young man complains that his girlfriend never turns up for their dates. Players will choose a tempo. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. Here, the Bass sings the melody. DURATION: 11 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: Two Bb CLarinets, Bass Clarinet.

Old W.F.B. was quite a character, and here he seems to be trying to surpass his Fathers grasp of counterpoint, but in my humble opinion he merely equals it!

An accompanied clarinet trio opening with an exciting motive. The first rendition is in block harmonies with occasional rhythmic punctuations. The next section has subtle contrapuntal statements amongst all parts giving a joyous texture. After a modulation the ensemble alternates between solo statements and full ensemble giving contrasts in texture and color. Another modulation ensues where imitative motives take place through the voices only to come together in a solid fashion for an exciting ending.

The Pifa, commonly referred to as the Pastoral Symphony is the thirteenth movement and the second of two instrumental interludes during the Messiah. The name comes from shepherd pipers who would play in the streets of Rome around Christmas time. It was written for two violins and a cello.

An accompanied clarinet trio which begins with a flowing motif setting up a sense of serenity. The first statement allows all three of the clarinets to intertwine for a constant, gentle movement- this action is a common denominator throughout the piece. A modulation takes place where the pitch is elevated, but also the rhythms more intense as the piece becomes more fluid even as the three solo lines are unaccompanied. The final statement is strong, bold and resolved.
