The earwig song was originally a vocal piece based on a poem by Wilhelm Busch in which the poet (Balduin Bählamm) lies down in a meadow full of potential inspiration when an earwig enters his ear and distracts him somewhat! I have re-arranged my setting for various trio versions: (clarinet trio and various flute trio arrangements with bass or alto flute taking the bottom line) The pdf file contains score and parts. Arrangement of a song from the 15th Century Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, sung by the women of Bethlehem mourning the imminent death of their babies after Herod heard of the birth of the Messiah in their town and sent his soldiers there to kill all the potential claimants to his crown (ie children of Jesus' age). I have given each instrument an opportunity to play the main melody as the variations progress and there is also a running countermelody of the mothers' tears at various points. The Coventry Carol is a traditional 16th Century carol, from Coventry in England that was composed to be performed as part of The Mystery Plays. The song accompanies the story of the nativity according to Matthew, the lullaby sound of the pieces reflects a mothers sorrow after Herod orders the killing of all new born sons. This arrangement for clarinet trio is ideal for the early beginner. An optional bass clarinet is included to be substituted for the third clarinet.

This is part of a series of fifteen easy clarinet trios (for 1st or 2nd year students) based on traditional English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs. I was specially requested to write these arrangements by a clarinet teacher in Italy. The range does not go above the soprano top C (2 ledger lines above the treble clef) and the settings avoid the difficult transition a to b between the chalumeau and clarino ranges. The key signatures (as written) range from two flats to three sharps. The entire collection is available here as a set for $22.00 (15 easy clarinet trios) or, if preferred, the individual pieces are also available separately (at $2.50 each). As each piece comprises only one or two pages the players will be able to read directly from the scores, without the need for separate parts (which also gives the advantage of being able to see what the others are playing.
