In those he used English folk tunes or tunes he composed having a folk flavor. This piece set by John Gibson for saxophone trio comes from Holst's Toccata for piano based upon the Northumbrian song Newburn Lads. It is 2 minutes long, so one entertaining idea would be to play it slowly first and then increase the tempo each time. Cecile Chaminade was one of the pioneers of women composers in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Her Havanaise Op. 57 was written for piano and published in 1905. The name, Havanaise, has to do with the people and their music in Havana, Cuba. The piece uses a habanera / tango rhythm throughout and frequently is written with three parts, making it ideal for a saxophone trio arrangement (alto, tenor, baritone saxes).
