God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen is one of the oldest and most popular Christmas carols from 16th-century England. The earliest known printed edition was published in 1760. The song has been known by different names throughout history, including God Bless You, Merry Gentlemen and God Rest Ye, Merry Christians. The lyrics convey the message of comfort and joy, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and the tidings of salvation from Satan's power. The song has been featured in various cultural works, including Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Despite claims that the music originated in the 15th century, evidence supporting this is lacking, and the earliest known source documenting the existence of the carol dates to the mid-18th century. The song is widely misunderstood as being addressed to merry gentlemen, but the phrase God rest ye merry actually means God make you mighty or God keep you strong. We Three Kings is a Christmas hymn John Henry Hopkins Jr. penned in 1857. It describes the journey of the Wise Men, also known as the Magi, to see the baby Jesus. The names of the kings passed down through tradition are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. The number three in the title stems from the fact that there were three separate gifts given to Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The hymn was composed for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where Hopkins taught music. It was the first Christmas carol to achieve widespread popularity originating from the United States. The song is known for its lilting tune in triple meter and its distinctive contribution to the Christmas carol repertoire, with a narrative-ballad style and a straightforward, child-friendly narrative.
