This baroque trio for 3 violins, arranged from transverse flute, is a great ensemble piece for early-intermediate and intermediate students. The first violin part is the only part that must shift, but all parts have challenging fast notes and, as in Telemann's Concerto for 4 Violins, every part gets their moment in the spotlight! Four movements (two slow and two fast) can easily be reordered or recombined for shorter performances. For ease of rehearsing, these parts come with coordinated bowings and plenty of rehearsal letters.

I have included various harmonisations of the wonderful tune and a short contrapuntal development section in the middle to add some interest. The clip is from the development section. In this version there is a viola playing theViolin 3 part but the differences are very small. Mostly I had to put the Violin part up an octave when it went below the lowest string but otherwise the harmony is much the same. The quartet play with few open strings, lots of vibrato and slurred bows. That would be fine for Grade 5 players and above. However, open strings and one note per bow could still sound good, and the violin in the high positions could easily be played down an octave. All the double stopping includes an open string but could be divided between parts in a string orchestra. If teachers want to buy this for a young string orchestra or quartet, drop me a line on Facebook and I will upload an easier version to the site for you, with some small changes. He described the inspiration for the Scenes from Childhood� in a letter to his wife as follows: “ I often seemed like a child to you – in short, I felt as if I were in pinafores again� ..I wrote thirty quaint little things, about twelve of which I have selected and called Scenes from Childhood�. This charming arrangement for a trio of three violins is accessible to intermediate students, amateurs and professionals. The rhythm is a little complex, but the left hand work is all in first position.
