This arrangement is one of my most viewed on my YouTube channel. I made it several years ago and it's been very popular to play live as well. It's an iconic theme that's been around since the 1960's. If you play in a horn quartet, this is the arrangement to get. There are no drums in the arrangement like there are in my recording, but you can get a great idea of how it sounds by the YouTube link here.

Like all of my arrangements, I like to pass around melodic stuff so none of the parts are boring. This arrangement has some pretty extreme range and some fluttertongue in one of the parts. It's not extremely difficult but it can be challenging. Not for beginners. Intermediate to advanced. Thanks for checking it out!

This work for horn quartet is in 4 Movements. It is written for a formal performance setting, but could be used for a less serious occasion too. The piece is about 12 minutes in total duration. Here is a brief description of the piece: Movement 1 (Fragments) introduces the sound world of this piece, and features different sounds 'bouncing around' each other to create different melodies and harmonies. Movement 2 (Breakdown) is an exciting rhythmic movement, where all four horns play their independent lines, which join together to create a somewhat 'groovy' melody. This movement is short, entertaining, and would also be a great encore piece on its own. Movement 3 (Reflection) portrays a more relaxed mood, where timing is much more free, and the listener is drawn along through the shifting harmonies by each note in the musical line. It then transforms into a 'floating' section, and segues into the next movement. Movement 4 (Interlude and Finale) revisits the original 'bouncing sounds' idea, progresses to another rhythmically intricate 'groovy' motive, and finally reaches a stable, sonorous melody that showcases the brilliance and majestic sound of all four horns together, giving a satisfying close to this unique work.

The Renaissance period of music was filled with stunning pieces that are rarely heard today. The Christmas music of that era is characterized by beautiful modal melodies and fascinating, driving rhythms that can sometimes be wonderfully syncopated. “Three Renaissance Carols” brings together three magnificent carols, skillfully arranged for horn quartet.

The collection starts with the Latin carol “Gaudete,” which features droning reminiscent of bagpipes, and evokes the sounds of Renaissance instruments like the crumhorn and shawm. This beautiful choral is part of the Responsoria pro Hebdomada Sancta (Sacred Work pro Holy Saturday). It was originally written for 4-part choir, but also sounds very beautiful for horn quartet and great for an ensemble with the parts doubled.
