Siciliano by J S Bach arranged for Bassoon and Piano
Most arrangements of this music (the 2nd movement of J.S. Bach’s Sonata in E Flat for Flute and Cembalo BWV1031) repeat the first 22 bars of the original score, thus creating a lengthier piece suitable for a concert program. In this new arrangement, however, the repeated section is made more interesting by reversing the roles of the solo and accompaniment parts: the piano now plays the melodic line (along with the bass line as before) whilst the soloist provides the accompanying counterpoint. Bach’s original manuscript contains no performance directions other than a fermata (pause) at the very end. All performance directions in this version are suggestions only.

Prayer originated as an interlude for flute and piano in my choral setting of Psalm 19, Requiem, written in memory of

Marie Mountain Clark. She was a friend and former principal flute in the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (and

Congressional Gold Medal recipient for her service as a WWII Women's Air Service Pilot aEUR WASP). Since the

premiere of Requiem in 2009, several of my friends have asked me to transcribe Prayer for their instruments. It has

been used for weddings, funerals, offertories, and preludes.

Prayer precedes the final verses of Psalm 19 in the Requiem, and it introduces the Psalmist's poignant text on the

human weakness of willful transgression. Cleanse thou me from secret faultsaEUR|. Let the words of my mouth, and the

meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer (KJV).

I think the fact that I had a bad cold while writing this music added to its effectiveness, for I was feeling quite sorry for

myself. The melody portrays my prayer rising ever higher, asking forgiveness for my sins. The plagal (Amen) cadence

at the end acknowledges God's gracious forgiveness.

Difficulty level: College or advanced high school, requiring full control of intonation and long tones in all ranges.

You have just learned how to finger and play the first three notes on your instrument.  Now it is time for your first easy piece for performance!  My booklet  First Three Notes contains my arrangements of two well known tunes, Three Blind Mice and Mary Had a Little Lamb.  Prepared for the earliest beginners, it uses only the first three notes you learned on your instrument, and also uses only crotchet notes (quarter notes) and crotchet rests (quarter rests).  The piano accompaniment fills it out with simple but richly updated harmony.
