The first of these bears the subtitle A Litany for Bassoon and Piano and contains elements of bitonality within a modified sonata form. A brief cadenza after the recapitulation leads to a closing section reminiscent of a modal folksong. The second movement begins with a march-like character, but changes tempo and style several times before the dramatic conclusion. Bruce Gbur, bassoon, and Slawomir Dobrzanski, piano, presented the first performance of the Nabokov Sonata for Bassoon and Piano on a recital at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, on 27 February 2007. That performance was made possible through the kind permission of Mme. Dominique Nabokov, New York Ci_ty, and Richard Workman of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, Austin. I would also like to thank Mme. Nabokov and Mr. Workman for granting permission for the publication of this work. I am indebted to my friend Slawomir Dobrzanski for adding his fingerings to the piano score for this publication. I believe that the Nabokov Sonata for Bassoon and Piano will prove to be a significant addition to the bassoonists' twentieth-century recital repertoire.

The first section (mm 1-8) should be strongly accented, and all notes should be separated, depicting a medieval military group moving into protect a town. The second theme (mm 9-16) requires a quiet but firm strength and signifies the militia standing quietly at the ready. All quarter notes with tenuto marks should have weight to them. Listen carefully for the initial militant theme as it returns in the piano part (mm 17-24); it should be played strongly and heard clearly. The third theme, depicting the village resting peacefully, unaware of the battle, is in the new key of D major. Pay attention to the F#s and the C# at the end of this lyrical section. The first theme returns again at measure 39 in yet another new key, e minor. The piece builds from here to the end as the village is saved. The bassoon part states the same idea four times in measures 45-48, and each statement should be stronger than previous one.

This piece isconstructed of three movements that each tells a different story of its own. Opening expresses the mixed emotions offlying home and seeing the surrounding clouds from the airplane window. Panorama is a stark contrast to the firstmovement where the music is in a concise form, depicting the layout and landscape of the ground as seen from the plane(e.g. palm tree plantation). Grandpa's House, the concluding movement of this work, was written in memory of my lategrandfather. Each motive represents various childhood memories at the traditional village house, such as playing the 5-stone game known as Batu Seremban with my cousins, cycling in the backyard, and jumping rope made out of rubber bands.Duration: 12 minutes

The first theme (mm 5-20) should have a very ethereal, mysterious character, which is characterized by its key of g minor. The second theme (mm 21-28) is somewhat brighter, with the sun trying to work its way through the mists. The mists conquer the sun as the first theme returns (mm 33-40). Finally, the sun is victorious and shines brightly through the mists (mm 41-54). Notice how the music moves to a major key and the piano accompaniment is much more energetic and joyful. Your playing should convey those feelings. As night falls, though, the mists move back in as the first theme returns once again, and the whole piece fades into calm, mist-covered darkness.

A longer tutti (twenty measures) leads to Variation III, a slow exploration of the theme in the minor mode. A short cadenza connects this Variation to the Finale, a rollick­ing treatment of Im tiefen Keller in 6 I 8 meter. This is the longest portion of the work and contains two tutti sections which employ a variety of rhythmic pat­terns Vaas employs before bring the work to its conclusion.

The coming of spring was announced with an abundance of beautiful wild flowers blooming in the yard of my new Colorado home and the neighboring open fields, providing wonderful inspiration for my composition.The beginning of the 1st movement, Pastoral, captures the aura created by the gentle sunlight of a quiet spring afternoon, as it shines through the window and brightens my studio with a warm glow. The calm is suddenly interrupted with a spirited Vivace section that depicts the sound and energy of the neighborhood children at play, and their ensuing laughter and delight! In the end, the peaceful and tranquil opening passage is recapitulated to reflect the warm spring day.The 2nd movement,Fever, begins with an energetic pattern established by the solo bassoon, with driving rhythmic and melodic lines that are carried throughout the entire movement between both the bassoon and piano. The colorful harmonies and syncopated rhythms are somewhat bluesy and suggestive of ragtime.Abrupt changes in dynamics and registers in both instruments serve to create textures and develop thematic ideas, while keeping the syncopated motion driving relentlessly forward. The music relaxes momentarily in a fleeting cantabile section, like briefly catching one's breath, only to have the bassoon abruptly and emphatically restating the opening Fever theme and bringing the movement to its driven conclusion.
