Elgar composed Salut d'Amour, Op. 12 in 1888 while he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts (the work is dedicated to her). It's original title was Liebesgruss (Love's Greeting). It wasn't until the present title was used at the suggestion of his publisher that the work took off in popularity. It is one of Elgar's best-known works and has inspired numerous arrangements for widely varying instrumental combinations. Andrew Poirier's lovely arrangement for trombone quartet of advanced performers will make a beautiful addition to your recital.

Nimrod, the ninth variation from Elgar's masterpiece Op. 36, Enigma Variations (1898-99) is one of the most recognized works in the classical repertoire. There are so many adjectives to describe this piece of genius: stately, majestic, serious, solemn, moving, noble, languid, stoic, enduring and sublime. There are few works in the repertoire that bring forth such strong emotions as this work, which is often performed for funerals and for Memorial Day / Remembrance Day services. Mr. Sauer's arrangement is dedicated to the memory of the late Milt Stevens. This arrangement of 3-4 minutes in length is appropriate for an advanced performer on the top part and is of moderate difficultly for the rest.

It was one of the first recordings of a black orchestra. He recorded the piece several times, including one with Louis Armstrong. Jeremy Kempton has made a great arrangement for Trombone Quartet for moderately advanced performers including an open 8-bar solo section.

Jaeger who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar’s, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. The name of the variation refers to Nimrod, an Old Testament patriarch described as “a mighty hunter before the Lord� – Jäger being German for hunter. (Wikipedia).
