Individually the parts are not difficult, but it is the dynamic way they pulse together and interact that creates interest and excitement. It is a wild ride for one and a half minutes! It works equally well when played by advanced high school students, college students, or even professional ensembles. The notes themselves will not be difficult for any experienced quartet players. However, the real challenge here is to keep the groove going in the accompaniment while the lead player pulls the melody around, decorates it, maybe plays a little behind the beat. And the lead changes across all four parts! Without a rhythm section doing it for you, you’ll have to immerse yourself in that Latin groove. You have to feel the pulse of those eighth notes of the underlying rhythm to achieve the tight playing necessary to make this piece sound really convincing. Originally arranged for trombone quartet (and very successful in that format), I feel this (slightly modified) version works well for bassoons and will be a welcome lightweight addition to any concert.
