The notes are easy; the difficulty level depends on how well you feel offbeat rhythms. I have marked it as Intermediate not only because of rhythms, but also because it is all tongued and up tempo. For some instruments, Parts 1 & 4 might push the upper and lower range limits. Form is AA, bridge, BB, D.C., Coda with the A theme in a contrasting key. Individually the parts are not difficult, but it is the dynamic way they pulse together and interact that creates interest and excitement. It is a wild ride for one and a half minutes! Claude Debussy’s two sets of Préludes for piano have always been among my favorites and I have selected these three from Livre 1 because they work well on low instruments. The first and third preludes can be played on four bassoons, but the second requires the fourth player to switch to contrabassoon, although an alternative bassoon part is included. If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them.

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955751). Wave is one of those marvelous Latin numbers for which Antonio Carlos Jobim is so famous. The notes themselves will not be difficult for any experienced quartet players. However, the real challenge here is to keep the groove going in the accompaniment while the lead player pulls the melody around, decorates it, maybe plays a little behind the beat. And the lead changes across all four parts! Without a rhythm section doing it for you, you’ll have to immerse yourself in that Latin groove. You have to feel the pulse of those eighth notes of the underlying rhythm to achieve the tight playing necessary to make this piece sound really convincing. Originally arranged for trombone quartet (and very successful in that format), I feel this (slightly modified) version works well for bassoons and will be a welcome lightweight addition to any concert.
