It is essentially a military-style march with characteristic themes, but with a few harmonic twists. Performers should carefully observe articulation marks and note lengths in order to produce the all-important contrasts of longs and shorts so essential to the genre. Likewise, careful observation of dynamics will help bring this jaunty work to life.

As I received the invitation for this collaboration, I immediately knew that I wanted to give the quartet something powerful and of merit that reflects the name of the group. RUN conveys the message that we, as humans, are always running and chasing for something else in our lives; the various rhythmic patterns in the music are the different paces we take for the journey.The quartet is free to modify the tempo of the piece at their own discretion- according to their running pace for each section. Though restless with ostinatos in majority of the piece, the climactic passage slows down rhythmically, and the melody captures the idea that we should each search for the meaning and reason for the race in life.I hope this piece ignites the rhythm within you to keep running your very own race.Duration: 5 minutes.

This traditional folksong, which dates back to the early 19th century, has been given some new life with this arrangement for bassoon quartet. The floating melody, primarily in the 1st bassoon part, is passed around to other players, while the 4th bassoon lays the strong foundation, much like the strong a steady current of the Missouri River. The dynamics in this arrangement urge the performers to swell in and out and they play, reflective of the ripples in the water as canoes and boats float by. Be sure not to rush this piece, and refer to some of the traditional lyrics:Oh Shenandoah,I long to hear you,Away, you rolling river.'Tis seven years since last I've seen you,Away, you rolling river.There is a sense of longing in the various lyrics of the original folk song, whether because of missing home, missing a loved one, or the pains of forbidden love. Performers are urged to play with the same delicacy of those intimate emotions and gentle waters of the large river. The ending should be reflective of echoes in the open air on the river as one floats across the wide Missouri.
