The Variations on a Theme by Handel are based on the Sarabande from Handel's Suite No. 11 in D Minor, a movement made famous by the 1975 motion picture Barry Lyndon by director Stanley Kubrick. Indeed, this superlative film, which brought to the screen a remarkably authentic interpretation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844), won an Oscar for its imaginative musical adaption of Handel's theme. This cinematic gem stimulated Ford to create four new variations which he interpolated into Handel's original score, a short movement consisting only of the theme and variations two and three of the present work. Exactly why Handel provided this majestic Sarabande with only two variations may never be precisely known, but Ford's expansion of the movement by more than half its original length makes for a compelling and aesthetically satisfying concert solo.

Both pieces are in the Key of C, both are binary, and both are written in a style reminiscent of Mozart. They both have an upbeat, happy feel and are fun to play. One is a Minuet and the other is a Gavot. The Gavot introduces Alberti bass, triplets, mordents, and different phrasing between the hands. Repeated sections alternate loud-soft, detached-slurred, major-minor. The Minuet has an easy fanfare theme of repeated notes, scales, and arpeggios, then 6 variations which introduce neighbouring notes, tonic minor, inversions, light syncopation, mordents, staccato, and octave. Here is a spritely carol with a very specific set of musical parameters that belies its flowing sound. The right hand melody, so familiar to many of us, with its melismatic phrases, is set in fifths and fourths ONLY. the accompaniment, in the left hand bass, is octaves and fifths, filled in at the top of the bottom with a whole step. A very restricted set of materials, yet they complement the song in its simplicity and verve. This arrangement is NOT as suitable for vocal accompaniment as the others in the series. Melismas in 5ths, not easy to sing along with. But, fun to play! MBB.
