The Variations on a Theme by Handel are based on the Sarabande from Handel's Suite No. 11 in D Minor, a movement made famous by the 1975 motion picture Barry Lyndon by director Stanley Kubrick. Indeed, this superlative film, which brought to the screen a remarkably authentic interpretation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844), won an Oscar for its imaginative musical adaption of Handel's theme. This cinematic gem stimulated Ford to create four new variations which he interpolated into Handel's original score, a short movement consisting only of the theme and variations two and three of the present work. Exactly why Handel provided this majestic Sarabande with only two variations may never be precisely known, but Ford's expansion of the movement by more than half its original length makes for a compelling and aesthetically satisfying concert solo.

The Italian concerto, as a style, relies upon the contrasting roles of two different groups of instruments in an ensemble: bach emulates this effect, creating contrast by means of the different manuals. This is, along with the French Overture and some of the Goldberg Variations one of the free pieces by this composer that asks specifically for a two-manual instrument.

One is a Minuet and the other is a Gavot. The Gavot introduces Alberti bass, triplets, mordents, and different phrasing between the hands. Repeated sections alternate loud-soft, detached-slurred, major-minor. The Minuet has an easy fanfare theme of repeated notes, scales, and arpeggios, then 6 variations which introduce neighbouring notes, tonic minor, inversions, light syncopation, mordents, staccato, and octave. This piece has what is, in effect, a one-measure subject, and a one-measure countersubject. They play against each other for most of the piece, emphasizing various pitches, until they come together, as each one is played in both voices, and the piece concludes with some nice contrary motion on the main subject. Articulation and the four quarter-notes of the countersubject give the piece a stately but not too somber mood. Bach liked Eb minor better, but I picked sharps for my own edification, as I am quite used to flats. MBB.
