Go Tell It on The Mountain is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Tenor Saxophone.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is most often considered a Christmas Carol with the original lyrics,

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

Nothing is known of its origins, but it first appeared in print in an 1865 collection of Spirituals. More recently, the lyrics have been adapted to support the struggle for human rights, most famously by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played twice in swing style after a brief introduction; after a short breakdown the key changes and the melody is repeated at a slower tempo. Calypso d’Isaac is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Tenor Saxophone.

This duet is written in the style of Calypso music. Calypso’s roots lie in West Africa but first appeared in recognisable form in the late 19th century in Trinidad.  Originally sung in French Creole, the music quickly spread throughout the Caribbean and Venezuela. The modern English-language Trinidadian style is often topical and political in content. Calypso performers such as Mighty Sparrow in turn have inspired new styles such as Ska, Reggae and Soca, while Calypso rhythms can be heard in countless international hits such as Mary’s Boy Child and Disney’s Under the Sea.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Following the articulation in the score will help convey the relaxed but rhythmic style.
