It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (Bb and F) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. Carol of the Bells was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, a New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow, and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. One version, Ring, Christmas Bells, an English-language variant with Nativity-based lyrics, was written by Minna Louise Hohman in 1947. It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.   4, BMV   4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement is more complex than the previous one.. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.   4, a straightforward four-part setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps.
