Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Joropo de Justina is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Oboe.This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Joropo which is the national and traditional music of Venezuela. The music and its accompanying dance comes from the central plains area and is also found over the border in parts of Colombia. The basic pulse of the Joropo is 3, but this is overlaid with complex cross-rhythms. The main instrument is the harp, along with cuatro and maracas as the only percussion instrument. In the modern era other instruments may join the ensemble, especially bass. This arrangement represents the song style of Joropo, with the vocal alternating with instrumental breaks.If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. I have greatly abridged and simplified the piece into a 2 part instrumental duet without losing any of the character of the Romantic piece. I have arranged themes from each of the three sections, keeping the original structure, but taking liberties such as changing phrasing, dynamics, adding my own markings, and even changing the Time Signature in certain passages. I begin with each instrument taking solo turns on the melody and end with a similar cadenza style set of solos for each instrument. The two parts are of equal importance and much of the character is in the interplay between the two instruments. This is a beautiful concert arrangement of a beloved classic.

The Merengue dance became hugely popular in the 1950s and new forms continue to draw audiences around the world.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady quintilla tambora rhythm is present throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style.
