Calypso’s roots lie in West Africa but first appeared in recognisable form in the late 19th century in Trinidad. Originally sung in French Creole, the music quickly spread throughout the Caribbean and Venezuela. The modern English-language Trinidadian style is often topical and political in content. Calypso performers such as Mighty Sparrow in turn have inspired new styles such as Ska, Reggae and Soca, while Calypso rhythms can be heard in countless international hits such as Mary’s Boy Child and Disney’s Under the Sea.
