Joy to the World is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for one Flute and one Oboe. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.

With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Joy to the World is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.

Joy to the World is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played two and a half times, with a short chiming intro and outro. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate level.

Ode to Joy is best known for its use by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824. Beethoven's text is not based entirely on Schiller's poem, and introduces a few new sections. His tune (but not Schiller's words) was adopted as the Anthem of Europe. This Flute and Oboe Duet takes this famous melody through three keys. (Eb, F, and G) Both parts have an equal share of the theme.

March of the Three Kings for Flute / Oboe Duet arranged at the Intermediate level.
The Crusades, those religious expeditions to rescue the holy places in Palestine from the Muslims, created an enormous interest in both faith and fighting in the Middle Ages. French peasants from Provence in the 13th century, when the tune for this March of the Kings was being sung and danced to, must have endowed the Three Kings of the Christmas story with all the virtues and appearance of their own folk heroes nearer at hand. These were the French dukes, clad in gleaming armor, carrying brilliant banners and bejeweled shields, who fought for the Pope far more willingly than they would have for the lives of their own serfs. Hence the martial references in this text, sung to a tune that is perhaps even older than the verses. Georges Bizet, composer of the opera Carmen, used the same tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlesienne (The Woman from Aries). The March of the Three Kings has been arranged in the woodwind friendly key of g minor at the Intermediate level.
