It was written in 1969 by the jazz trumpeter Thad Jones with lyrics added independently by Alec Wilder after hearing the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra perform the instrumental. The instrumental and the song have been recorded by a number of musicians including Tony Bennett, Stanley Turrentine and Bill Evans.

An aptly titled album, Friends finds Chick in a beautifully relaxed setting with three jazz luminaries: Joe Farrell (Chick’s Return to Forever partner), Eddie Gomez (longtime Bill Evans bassist) and Steve Gadd (one of Chick’s favorite drummers). The mood might be relaxed, but the music is anything but laid-back: the quartet digs deep on eight of Chick’s originals, including the revelatory “Samba Song� and the supremely swinging “The One Step.�.

All the Things You Are is a song composed by Jerome Kern with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II. The song was written for the musical Very Warm for May (1939). Its verse is rarely sung in the 2020s, but the chorus has become a favorite with many jazz musicians. This arrangement includes the lyrics.
