Growing up in the '40s and '50s in Chicago, Herbie Hancock was around street vendors, including the watermelon men, who peddled the fruit. This provided the title and musical inspiration for the song. Hancock wrote: In reflecting on my childhood, I recalled the cry of the watermelon man making his rounds through the back streets and alleys of Chicago's South Side. The wheels of his wagon beat out the rhythm on the cobblestones. This is one of the most famous jazz compositions ever recorded. Hancock was just 22 when he released it on his first album, Takin' Off.

It was sung in the stage and film versions of the musical by Carol Haney. The song is about a fictional invitation-only nightclub of the same name where lovers can meet for secret rendezvous. According to author Dave Hoekstra, Hernando's Hideaway was based on Hilltop, an establishment in East Dubuque, Illinois that had been a speakeasy in the 1920s where Al Capone once hid out from the Chicago police..

All That Jazz is a song from the 1975 musical Chicago.  It has music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, and is the opening song of the musical. The title of the 1979 film, starring Roy Scheider as a character strongly resembling choreographer/stage and film director Bob Fosse, is derived from the song.  Liza Minnelli recorded a single version in 1975 and has  also performed it many times in concert.

Their manager advised them to take a short break from their work and go to a movie theater to see the film. Richard and Karen were immediately taken with this song and agreed that it should be the follow-up to their previous hits. After returning home, they recorded it, released it in December, and it went gold in only two months. The Carpenters' success with this song helped it win the 1970 Oscar for Best Song.
