The musical film of the same name, Singin' in the Rain (1952), was suggested by the song. The performance by Gene Kelly dancing through puddles in a rainstorm garnered the song the third spot on the American Film Institute ranking of 100 Years...100 Songs. The song was incorporated by Michael Kamen into his score for the 1988 film Die Hard, where it is most closely associated with the character of Theo. Diana Krall included it on her 2020 album This Dream of You.

That single and its video were dedicated to the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, who died that year, with proceeds from the sale of the single going towards Diana's charities. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, with certified sales, this double A-side is the best-selling single of all time. The Guinness World Records 2009 states that the song is the biggest-selling single since UK and US singles charts began in the 1950s, having accumulated worldwide sales of 33 million copies.
