Always On My Mind did not see completion until late 1971. Songwriter-guitarist Wayne Carson had about two verses done, with the working title You Were Always On My Mind. He had been occupied in Memphis on a project that required him to stay ten days longer, and he phoned his wife in Springfield, Missouri, to apologize for the delay. She was angry, and he replied: Well, I know I’ve been gone a lot, but I’ve been thinking about you all the time. His words struck him as potential song material, and he quickly ended the call so he could capture the idea on paper.

This arrangement does not include lyrics, the melody, or a vocal part. The parts are designed for live performance with a vocalist that knows the melody and lyrics. American Boy is the breakout hit from Estelle’s 2008 album Shine. This arrangement features a combined Rhythm Section part with clear chord spellings and rhythmic cues for bass guitar, drum kit, guitar, and piano. Additionally, the arrangers have included original backing parts for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and trombone to add depth of textures and dynamics to the arrangement. The horn parts include up to the three voices in harmony allowing a choice of which horn takes the first, second, or third part. The title character is a faded former Southern belle from Brownsville, Tennessee, who, at 41, is obsessed to unreason with the long-ago memory of a suitor who jilted her. The lyrics describe how the woman regularly walks downtown with a suitcase in her hand / looking for a mysterious dark haired man who she says will be taking her to his mansion in the sky.

Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to find out all that I have to offer and to express your comments or concerns.  You can also type John Fries in the searchbar to see all I have to offer.  On My Own is a duet by American singers Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald.  It was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and his then-wife Carole Bayer Sager and originally recorded by singer Dionne Warwick for inclusion on her album Friends (1985).  The two performers were in separate cities when they recorded their individual parts which were then married during mixing.  This was reflected in the music video produced to promote the song, which depicted LaBelle and McDonald performing the song simultaneously on different coasts.  The singers were shown on separate sides of a split screen, each singing the song while walking through apartments which had identical layouts but different decor and furniture.  The views from their respective porches, where they finished the song, made clear their separation by the continent.
