Its title, a reference to a watercolor painting in his room, is a clear reference to the rain. Initially, he wrote the first three melancholy chords and the samba beat that follows highlights the sound of the rain. According to him, the rest came naturally, music and lyrics at once. He declared to have felt like another person after writing the song so easily.

These were composed around 1718−1720, when Vivaldi was the court chapel master in Mantua. They were published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention). The Four Seasons is the best known of Vivaldi's works. The song was then covered on Helen Reddy's 1972 album, I Am Woman. It was then recorded by American vocal duo, the Carpenters, for their 1973 album Now & Then and as the B-side of the Carpenters's single Please Mr. Postman. Three years later, This Masquerade was recorded by American singer and guitarist George Benson, who released it on his 1976 album, Breezin'. Benson's version, featuring Jorge Dalto on piano, was released as a single and became the first big hit of his career.
