By The Carpenters. By Bob Morrison and Johnny Wilson. Arranged by John Fries. 20th Century,Country,Jazz,Pop,Standards. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 2 pages. John Fries #733670. Published by John Fries (A0.1133526).

Make Believe It's Your First Time is a song written by Bob Morrison and Johnny Wilson. Originally recorded by Bobby Vinton, the song was twice recorded by Karen Carpenter, both as a solo act and as a member of the Carpenters. Between 1979 and 1980, Karen Carpenter went to New York to record a solo album with Phil Ramone as producer. Make Believe It's Your First Time was one of twenty songs recorded. This version was ultimately shelved until 1996, with the release of her eponymous album, Karen Carpenter. Karen's solo version is far more subdued with only a piano, bass and drums as her accompaniment. The Carpenters recorded a version of Make Believe It's Your First Time for their 1981 album Made in America. The song, like Karen's solo version, went unreleased in her lifetime and was not included on the album. After Karen's death in 1983, the song was placed on the Carpenters' next album, Voice of the Heart, and was released as a single. Richard Carpenter's arrangement uses far more instrumentation, adds a bridge written specifically for this version, key modulation during the last chorus, and the inclusion of background vocals.

The history of the song Top Of The World - The Carpenters
Top Of The World is a classic song by the American duo The Carpenters, released in 1972 and composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. The song became a huge hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1973.

Composition and Inspiration:

The song's lyrics express the feeling of euphoria and intense happiness that true love can provide. The chorus, with the phrase I'm on top of the world, symbolizes the peak of happiness and the feeling that anything is possible when you're in love.

History:

The song was initially composed to be just one track on an album. However, when Lynn Anderson's version, released in mid-1973, was successful, the Carpenters regretted not releasing their version as a single sooner.
The Carpenters' version was released as a single on September 17, 1973 and became a huge success, reaching the top of the charts in several countries.
Top Of The World became one of the duo's most popular and beloved songs, frequently appearing on compilations and live performances.

Their manager advised them to take a short break from their work and go to a movie theater to see the film. Richard and Karen were immediately taken with this song and agreed that it should be the follow-up to their previous hits. After returning home, they recorded it, released it in December, and it went gold in only two months. The Carpenters' success with this song helped it win the 1970 Oscar for Best Song.

It was originally only an album track; 2 years passed before it was released as a single. During 1973-74, the Carpenters found themselves with a busy touring schedule, which kept them from working on new material. As a result, they had no album issued for the year. They decided to choose this song for single release. It works well as a piano solo. If you have need for a special arrangement or wish to see what I have available email me at jfries@ptd.net.
