Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to find out all that I have to offer and to express your comments or concerns.  You can also type John Fries in the searchbar to see all I have to offer.  On My Own is a duet by American singers Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald.  It was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and his then-wife Carole Bayer Sager and originally recorded by singer Dionne Warwick for inclusion on her album Friends (1985).  The two performers were in separate cities when they recorded their individual parts which were then married during mixing.  This was reflected in the music video produced to promote the song, which depicted LaBelle and McDonald performing the song simultaneously on different coasts.  The singers were shown on separate sides of a split screen, each singing the song while walking through apartments which had identical layouts but different decor and furniture.  The views from their respective porches, where they finished the song, made clear their separation by the continent.

Here's my homage to one of my favorite contemporary bassists, Rodney Whitaker. Nicknamed Big Money by Wynton Marsalis, Rodney played for years with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, whose recordings in the '90s were hugely influential for me. ​ The Left Side was the title of one of the tunes Roy wrote for the group, and it's inclusion in my title was an additional reference to the importance of this time in my musical development. ​ I tried to capture something of the spirit of that time in the composition, and the fact that Ron Blake was also a member of these important Hargrove ensembles added extra weight to the recording for me.

First released in 1991 by the Marcy Brothers with the title Don't Tell My Heart, it was later recorded by American singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus. The song is Cyrus's debut single and signature song. It became a crossover hit on pop and country radio, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Hot Country Songs chart, becoming the first country single to be certified platinum. The music video for the song led to the explosion of the line dance into the mainstream. The song is considered by some as one of the worst songs of all time, featuring at No. 2 on VH1 and Blender's list of the 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever. However, it later became a cult classic.
